Mall Apps

I used to get lost in a sense of losing direction in mall especially the big one such as Midvalley Megamall, Sunway Pyramid and One Utama. This all happened because I was depending on the hard-copy maps from information counter. Then one day these maps become extinct as they change to paperless policy. That is when I started to get lost in a mall.

Luckily they implement information kiosk at every floor.Through this information kiosk, consumers are able to check on the mall maps and information they required.

After that, every time I was lost in a mall, I go and search for the information kiosk. However, it is tiring and time consuming since I need to go to it and it is not mobile.

Then the technology came, apps is booming, smartphone usage increased, and internet penetration also increased.

The mall became creative and come out with their own very helpful apps. I will share with you Sunway Pyramid's apps which I found very helpful and easy to use.

Basically you can search stores nearby you if you get lost to get accurate information of your location. Let say I was nearby Carlo Rino shop, then I just search for Carlo Rino on the apps.

You also check direction or maps from one location to another using the maps. Let say I am at 1901 Hotdogs and I want to go to Carlo Rino. So I just search for Carlo Rino and click Direction to Here from 1901 Hotdogs outlet. Below are the direction from my search.

Basically the maps told me that Carlo Rino is two level down from 1901 Hotdogs and I need to take escalator to go down. Then I need to walk across AEON entrance to get to Carlo Rino.

Apart of that, that apps also have compass function in it. So if you are in the actual mall and you use the apps to get from one shop to another, you can actually see from the compass if you are going to right direction or not.

On top of that you no need to be afraid to forget your parking location as long as you snap the bar-code of at your parking location. You can check your parking location through the apps parking scanner.

Other than that you are also able to check the promotion of the stores or retails in the mall and check what is happening or any event held at Sunway Pyramid.

It is a better way to shop at mall! Especially if you losing your wife during the mega sale period :)

M-Commerce via apps

Mobile commerce or m-commerce is e-commerce via phone. Using online banking via phone is m-commerce, using apps for transaction is m-commerce, and any transaction using phone is m-commerce.

The example that I would to share here is the thing that I have been doing for every month which is paying my phone bill via DIGI apps.

I can either pay my phone bill through DIGI website or DIGI apps but it is more convenience to pay via apps since I bring my smartphone with me almost all the time. So first you will need to have the apps or My Digi apps from apple store or android play store. Then the apps will detect your number and give you option to continue with the number or not..

Then you will log to you your account and able to see details as per below image. Please click on Pay bills icon and you will arrive at Payment/Reload page where you will be able to see your account details. According to below image I have an outstanding of RM 157.04 and I choose to make payment you you can see the m-commerce process flow. So, I click on Continue button.

Then I will be directed to payment section where I have option either to pay by credit card or others option. Since this is not my first time paying bill through this apps using my credit card, they already have some of my credit card information except the CVC/CVV2.

Once I click to proceed with the payment, the system will send the data or application to your respective banker ePay system.

Then the bank will ask to key in secure ePay code that they sent to your mobile phone to prove that you are the one who apply for the transaction as part of IT security measure.

After you key in the code and choose to proceed, the bank will processing your payment.

Once completed, DIGI system will send you sms for your payment confirmation. The DIGI apps will acknowledge that the Payment is Successful.

On top of sms, DIGI will send you email for the receipt.

The payment is fast and reliable (depend on your internet connection). It save a lot of time and eco friendly due to paperless receipt.

Online Banking

I started using online banking in 2011 after I graduated from university and returned to Malaysia. I used to have BSN account but I think the already extinct since I have not done any transaction since high school. So I opened up Maybank Islamic account and CIMB account to make ease for my employer to pay my salary and for my financial transaction needs.

Traditionally,  without online banking, consumers will go to the bank during office hours to do their transaction at counter or anytime via ATM machines. It can be illustrated by below picture, courtesy of the star. It is time consuming and lot of hassle.

With online banking, no more hassle as the transaction can be done online except during maintenance time 247. Yay!

I used to transact with Maybank heavily when I first got my Maybank Credit Card because Maybank give a lot of points but nowI am using CIMB heavily as I no longer have eagerness to collect point and redeem gift but I would to have rebate on my purchases or expenditure which i can get with CIMB. I used CITIBANK once and decided to cancelled it off when they change the benefit of their credit card.

So, I will explain about my point of view as a consumer to CIMB's cimbclicks.com online banking system because I been using this one heavily since middle of last year if i am not mistaken. Below is cimbclicks interface once you login with your CIMB's account.

Source: cimbclicks.com.my

It is quite convenience with online banking since we can do a lot of transaction that we need to do in weekly basis or monthly basis. Nowadays, there is not many people go to service providers office such as TNB, TM, Indah Water or Astro to make their bill payment because they are able to do so by using online banking. Even if you to make an investment or top up your prepaid phone, that can be done online as well. You can see critical function of online banking from CIMB in below image.

As for myself, I normally use online banking to pay my credit cards, housing and car loans, transfer money for house rental fee, pay my postpaid bill, pay my streamyx bill, pay zakat, and transfer money.

Moreover you can set frequent account that you transfer to or conduct transaction as favorite. So you will save more time when you want to to make re-occurrence payment.

If you want to save more time, you can set a schedule transaction through your cimbclicks account but you must have money in your account in order for the system to proceed with payment for your behalf. If you plan to pay by credit card, you will need to do it manually. Some biller account are not accessible if you pay by credit card such as in my case, i am paying my mother's car loan to Toyota Capital and they online allow payment in cash transfer. Below images is the favorite i set in my cimbclicks account for frequent transaction.

There is a downside of using cimbclicks that i would like to share as well. Recently I set up a scheduled transactions with cimbclicks.com but when I want to change it, lets say change date or value I am not able to do so via cimbclick. The system only allow you add schedule transaction, cancel schedule transaction if you do not have enough balance, show pending transaction if yo do not have enough balance but not to manage it. As a consumers I would want more control and user friendly system.

Referring to feedback from the customer service above I think they also not familiar with their own system.

However, I think cimbclicks has become better and better in term of user friendliness and ease of transaction. They spend a lot for the new system, maintenance and security.

In conclusion, online banking had affected a lot our daily life as transactions become easier and faster.

My next post will be online payment using apps.

Stay tuned!

E-Commerce

Electronic commerce or known as e-commerce is an online transaction which typically done through computer network. It can be divided into three segments which are Business to Business (B2B), Business to Consumers (B2C) and Consumers to Consumers (C2C). Examples of e-commerce activities is shown in below image.

Source: www.cleverism.com

Out of five activities shown above I have experience using e-commerce for online shopping, online ticketing, electronics payments and internet banking. In my opinion, virtual auctions is not popular in Malaysia. I have seen some foreign countries websites doing auction but rarely in Malaysia.

By using e-commerce, we do not require a physical office or retail location to do transaction. Thus consumers, buyers, sellers, and businesses do not required to be presence physically in order for transaction to happen. This will save times for both parties because consumers do not need to queue in lines waiting to be serve, do not need to do transaction during office hours only, and do need to walk to browse all the product. On the seller or business side, they do not need to hold a physical store or warehouse for their products, they can reach consumers anywhere, they can save cost of their business, and consumers can browse their product digitally anytime. The business and transaction can be conducted 247!

However, e-commerce also have their disadvantages because the transaction is done online. Thus they have high reliability on the internet. The internet have to be fast, reliable and secure. On top of that, consumers also need to have devises such as laptop or computer to browse the product or proceed with the transaction. There are studies in Malaysia that shown Malaysian are still prefer to buy or shopping a physical product which they can see and touch which give them the feeling and superior experience. If they purchase online, they will need to wait for the product to arrive and only able to see the online catalog or product which is impersonal. Moreover, they are exposed to fraud and credit car thief by exposing their details for transaction.

I will share my experience using e-commerce for online shopping, online ticketing, electronics payments and internet banking on my next post.

Stay tuned!

Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) application by Seoul's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)

Vehicle Tracking System or known as VTS allow us to monitor vehicle in real time based on their positioning which can be trace by using a Global Positioning System (GPS). Furthermore, we also able to monitor the vehicle condition by using specific sensor such as weight measurement or tire pressure measurement.

GPS use Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) network. The network transmit microwave signal to GPS devices in the vehicle to give information on their location, speed, time and direction.
GPS provides special satellite signals. These satellite signal are processed by a receiver and send to server.

VTS application by Seoul's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) was done to track the position on the bus fleet and to give real time update to customer. The bus tracking system is part of Bus Management System (BMS). It was introduced by then elected Seoul mayor, Mr Lee Myung Bak, who become South Korea President in 2008 (Korea University's alumni).

BMS uses uses advanced intelligent transport system (ITS) technology and Global Positioning System (GPS) which linked to the electronic fare system. Instead of just having information on the buses location, they are able to track information on the passenger boarding and individual bus or lane (bus track) performance. This require all buses to be fitted with GPS.

BMS center collect all data from the GPS to managing information and bus operation. By managing the information they are able to communicate to the bus companies, giver real time information to customers, and send data for display at bus stop. They also able managed network disruption better using the system which allow them to communicate directly with buses driver.

Copyright: Adapted from Yoon, 2008; and Kwon, 2010.

Customer can access the buses information online through website such as Daum.com or Naver.com which are the main website in South Korea. However, the information only on display in Korean. So you will need a basic Korean to understand the system.

The red dot in the map below represent bus station in some segment of Seoul City and if I browse the map in smaller scale we could see a lot more of red dots.

I am going to pick Myeondong Entrance bus station or bus stop for example of the BMS. You can see the bus station or bus stand with the bus symbol in the middle of below image.

The station bus or bus stop number is 02149. When i click on the bus symbol, i will be able to the see the incoming time of the buses toward this bus station in minutes and second as shown in below image.

초 is second and 분 is minutes. So you can see the bus arrival time and what time the second bus will arrive. For example bus number 104 will come in 31 second and another 104 bus will come in 10 minutes..

This allow customers or citizen to estimate the buses time arrival and plan their journey to their destination.

As for me, i think it is very convenient to travel by bus and train in Seoul because it is reliable and very convenience. Part of it is because both of the buses and train system is own by the government so it is easier for them to make proper change and modification. In fact in Seoul, the buses have their own lanes which make it even more efficient.
